Effortlessly manage and better organize your Photos librariesĭespite the fact that Photos does a fairly good job of keeping your photos organized, under one roof, and easily accessible, the application is somewhat limited in some respects and doesn’t bundle advanced photo organizing features. ![]() I can search for duplicate photos, and it is easy to create partial libraries as a backup of the new photos.PowerPhotos is a very useful macOS utility that makes it possible for you to efficiently organize your pictures using the native Photos app introduced by Apple with the launch of OS X 10.10.3. I like it most for giving me a second browser for my Photos Library, where I can browse the photos as a table with the metadata arranged in columns. It will work perfectly, if you do not enable "Optimize Storage" for your iCloud Photos Library. I did look at PowerPhotos and it seems that creating a separate library of those old pics I want to archive on a separate disk would be a great way to go and worth the purchase price and learning a new app. I am working daily with the library and import new photos, but it does not change the modification date. For me, the problem with the library size seems to be fixed in macOS 10.15.4, but the date modified is still wrong. Which version is it exactly? Did you already update to macOS 10.15.4? In the early versions of Catalina the "date modified" and the total size of the Photos Library did not update reliably. The system version below your post is stating macOS 10.15. Jeff, as to the modification date of the library: ![]() Since I've been working daily, shouldn't the modified date equal (or at least approximate) the date/time of the lates backup? I know there are a lot of issues/questions here, but I really appreciate your time and help. In looking for the info on optimizing, I checked on my Library.photoslibrary file in Time Machine and find it was created in 2015 and modified. I've just received a new photo scanner so I can start work (after I finish the work on Photos) on 40 years worth of my pics and slides - and then those in family archives after that. For the past week, I've been going through my library deleting some and adding titles to the others, and have gotten the total down to 4700 of which I've reviewed and kept 400. I did find out that I am not optimizing my Cloud storage. I've accumulated over 5200 photos since 2001 with little or no editing - just keep taking some pics and adding to my Mac and the Cloud. I am a complete novice when it comes to manipulating my photos. ![]() I suppose there may be some software that allows you to store older photos on a hard drive in a way that means you can still play them as a slide show or flick through quickly without having to open each one? Any ideas are appreciated.Īppreciate your and Keith's comments. However, I don't want to do this again as it is a bit messy and feels precarious. The last time I was faced with this problem, I made a new photos library and created a 'historical photos library' out of the photos I no longer needed immediate access to. The thing about having photos in the photos library is that it is easy to access them and view them as a slide show and I don't want to have to re-instate photos into my photos library each time I want to view them as a slide show etc. ![]() How to archive older photos to de-clutter photos library and take up less icloud space I understand that about putting older photos on an external hard drive and deleting them from the photos library in order to de-clutter and use less iCloud space, however, I'd like to be able to archive my older photos in a way that makes them easy to view/ access when I want to.
